After World War II Germany was divided into four different occupation zones. The soviet zone in the East became the German Democratic Republic in 1949. After that, Germany was divided into two different states. In 1961 the GDR began to erect a system of border fortification. Within the divided city of Berlin this was marked with an inviolable wall. The border control of the GDR alongside the inner German border was radical. On the 9th November 1989 the Berlin Wall fell as a result of long ongoing protests. On the 3rd October 1990 Germany celebrated its reunion. The GDR was dissolved. Eastern and Western Germany were united in the Federal Republic of Germany. Today is the 31st anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Since the last anniversary we spoke with many people and asked them about their thoughts and connection to this event.

In the first part of this series we talked to people who were born after 1989 and who grew up in the old states of Germany. Stay tuned for more!
